Women’s kimonos have a white portion around the neck.
This is because under the kimono, we wear another cloths called “Naga-juban”.
This isn’t kimono nor underwear, but thanks to it, you can enjoy the fashion of casual-kimono.
This time, I’m talking about “juban” and “han-eri”.
What is “naga-juban”?
When wearing a kimono, first put on your underwear, then put on the naga-juban, and finally put on the kimono.
The shape of the naga-juban is almost the same as the kimono.
This role is surprisingly large; sometimes its white collar makes us be gallant and choosing one with unexpected design is accented your style.
Though there is another kind of naga-juban, called “han-juban”, it’s a little complicated, so I’ll skip it this time.
“naga” means long and “han” means half in Japanese.
Naga-jubun is usually made of pure silk and polyester, but there are also cotton that absorbs sweat well and wool that is comfortable to wear.
I use cotton or silk even in winter because I sweat so much.
It is fashionable to see glances at naga-juban
Wearing kimono, naga-juban appears not only around the neck.
For example, you can see naga-juban from “furi” and its quality is high, people think she’s elegant and she might be a rich person.
“Furi” is a part of kimono, it refers to the portion of the sleeve that hangs below the armhole.
Also, when you walk fast, you can see naga-juban from your feet and it’s sexy!
Old people get angry at this, but I think appearing it at a glance is one thing that you feel Japanese beauty.
It’s fashionable to wear very simple kimono without pattern with naga-juban with gorgeous designs.
I think that hidden self-assertion is a Japanese character.
Han-eri is the point of the style and use it with your favorite fabric.
When we wear naga-juban, we attach han-eri to that.
Han-eri is a long cloth sewn along the collar of kimono.
Originally, it is for preventing from stain, but at the case of casual-kimono, it’s a place to express your style.
You can buy fashionable han-eri, but I use “tenugui”, that is Japanese towel, or my favorite fabric.
15cm of fabric is enough for that, so if you want to use an expensive cloth, it doesn’t cost too much.
I hope that you also enjoy kimono in your own way with stylish naga-juban and your favored han-eri.
